Summer’s over, although the “marks” it has left on our skin are still visible. Skin discolorations, such as spots or freckles, is a common phenomenon that occurs or reappears especially during the summer months. The reason behind their appearance is the disruption of the melanin production process by the melanocytes of the skin. More specifically, during our exposure to the sun, the creation of cells that are responsible for the production of melanin in the skin, also known as melanocytes, increases. This can sometimes lead to melanin hypersecretion, which is reflected on the skin through discolorations. Spots or freckles may vary in size or color intensity, while they usually appear to areas that are most of the time exposed to the sun, such as face, neck, arms as well as decollete.
The causes of skin discolorations vary, always depending on the human system. However, in most cases, the most important re:
Solar radiation: It’s the main cause of discolorations, especially if combined with insufficient use of sunscreen. For this reason, summer (when we are constantly exposed to sunlight) is the period when skin discolorations become more intense and maybe even bigger.
Hormonal factors: The increase of estrogen levels in the female body is another cause of skin discolorations. That’s why they usually occur during pregnancy, in women with polycystic ovaries or when taking contraceptives. However, the systematic and daily use of sunscreen will significantly reduce the likelihood of their occurrence.
Age: The passage of years may also provoke skin discolorations. Age-related freckles usually appear on the hands and decollete.
Skin lesions: In general, violent treatment of your skin can injure it and make it more prone to discoloration.
Many of the discolorations we acquired during summer, diminish or disappear at some point in winter. Though, if they persist or are permanent, then fall is the right time of the year to provide your skin with a specialized treatment.
