What we know about lice

Lice are parasitic bugs, which infect humans as well as animals. More specifically, scalp lice most commonly infect children and lay their eggs, called nits, on their hair. They can only be treated with specialized pesticides and ointments, that must be used with due care.

Scalp lice are transmitted -mainly- through head-to-head contact. However, they can also be transmitted through clothes or objects such as scarves, brushes, hair ribbons, hats, etc. When children play, they come really close to each other, while they also have the habit of exchanging their things. For this reason, lice are a common problem especially in primary school students.

It is important to know that lice do not distinguish between short or long hair, bathed or unwashed. This means that lice infestation isn’t an indicator of poor cleanliness. In addition, cutting children’s hair short isn’t a solution, as lice attach to the scalp regardless of the length of hair.

Anti-lice protection

The best way to avoid lice infestation is to check your children’s head frequently and encourage them to go to school with their hair pulled back.
