Facial pores are tiny openings on the epidermis, found on every skin type. Even if they seem unsightly or unpleasant, they play a significant role in allowing the skin to breathe by expelling sebum from follicles and sebaceous glands. Pores are also responsible for skin moisturization.
Skin type is one of the most important factors that affect the appearance of pores. Normal skin is characterized by closed, small, or even pores, while oily skin usually has open, enlarged pores and manifests excessive sebum secretion that makes it feel greasy. Certain areas on the face, such as the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin), have more pronounced pores since the sebaceous glands produce more oil. Furthermore, exposure to solar radiation, air pollution, hormonal problems, poor diet, or smoking can also affect the appearance of pores.
The size of facial pores is mostly a result of genetics (related to the structure of the glands); thus, you can’t permanently shrink them. However, you can minimize their appearance by paying attention to external factors that make them look bigger.
Application of sunscreen: Collagen is important for keeping the pores tight and the skin young, healthy, and firm. When collagen production is hindered, the skin’s elasticity decreases, resulting in enlarged pores. Sun is the number one collagen enemy; therefore, the use of sun protection – all year round – is essential to maintain the normal size of the pores. For complete protection, always apply your sunscreen 15′ before exposure to radiation.
Choosing the proper moisturizers: Skin moisturization is essential and should not be skipped under any circumstances. Especially, when it comes to oily skin with enlarged pores, the application of the right moisturizing product is particularly important, so always choose the products that suit and perfectly cover your own needs. MACROVITA Oil Balancing Mat Cream with olive oil & white tea is the 24-hour, fine-texture cream that you wish for. Helps the skin to regulate the secretion of sebum, limits shine and shrinks large pores, offering a velvety texture and matte finish. It is also excellent for use as a makeup base.
Hydration from within: Apart from using the right moisturizing products, the traditional way of hydration, simply by drinking pure water, can also be beneficial. Water hydrates the skin internally, while enhancing the process of eliminating toxins through the pores.
Removing makeup: Going to bed without thoroughly removing makeup is one of the worst habits. When the skin is not properly cleansed of cosmetics residues, pollutants, oils and other bacteria that have accumulated during the day, the facial pores become clogged and appear larger. Thus, it is important to remove makeup always, despite any tiredness or exhaustion.
Morning-evening face cleansing: Washing your face, every single morning and evening, helps to remove natural oils and impurities, facilitating the tightening of pores. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends washing your face up to 2 times a day -or more after sweating. Choose a gentle cleanser and avoid rubbing your skin.
Face mask: Applying a mask 1 or 2 times a week can significantly improve the appearance of pores. Choose OLIVE.ELIA Purifying Radiance Face Mask with olive oil & mulberry for a glowing and tightening effect. Cleanses the skin gently and tightens the pores, while maintaining its natural moisture and enhancing its vitality and durability. After the mask is removed, the skin glows, remaining smooth, fresh and radiant. Apply a rich layer evenly, avoiding the eye and lip areas. Let the mask dry for 15-20’ and then rinse off using warm water.
Extra Tip: It is recommended not to exfoliate on the same day you apply a face mask since over-treatment can cause irritation and lead to enlarged pores.
Eating foods rich in vitamin C: Vitamin C is essential for healthy and good-looking skin. It has strong antioxidant properties and enhances collagen secretion. In addition, it prevents water loss and acts against skin discolorations. Include more foods rich in vitamin C in your diet and your skin will thank you!
