Did you know that honey isn’t the only bee byproduct? Bees also produce a substance called bee propolis. Essentially, we talk about the resins and balms that bees collect from the tree bark and plant buds. Then they mix them with honey and wax, enrich them with enzymes and trace elements and use them for two main purposes: to protect the hive from animals, insects and microorganisms, as well as to sterilize the honeycomb cells.
The composition of propolis may differ and the proportions of its ingredients can vary according to the flora of the flock’s area of stay. You may find a yellow-green, orange-green, brown or even dark brown propolis. It has been proven to contain more than 300 different substances (resins, balms, wax, essential oils, pollen, flavonoids, phenolic – flavoring substances and trace elements) that provide propolis with many beneficial properties, thanks to which it has found several applications in modern hygiene, therapeutic treatment and cosmetology.

Which are the main properties and benefits of propolis?
Propolis has remarkable antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and analgesic properties. More specifically:
Antioxidant activity: Propolis’ antioxidant activity is particularly important, since it prevents the creation of free radicals, contributing to the fight against oxidative stress. That’s the reason why propolis is included in several food supplements.
Antibacterial action: Polyphenols contained in propolis appear to support the intestinal microflora, inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria and suppressing their adhesion to intestinal cells. Therefore, propolis may contribute to the treatment of gastroenteritis and colitis.
Antimicrobial action: Apart from bacteria, bee propolis acts also against microbes, thus it is included as a main ingredient in several hand soaps and cleansers. It also fights against viruses and fungi, contributing to the treatment of common cold symptoms and viruses.
Immune system: Propolis is often used to prevent as well as to treat certain pathological conditions, especially of the upper respiratory system (e.g., pharyngitis, sore throat), as it is considered to support the immune system, relieving the unpleasant symptoms. In fact, it is perfectly combined with vitamin C, pollen and royal jelly, ingredients found in various nutritional supplements that boost immune system’s functioning, especially during winter.
Skin health: Historically, bee propolis has been used as a means of disinfecting the skin also precipitating wound healing. It prevents sepsis and creates mild local anesthesia. It accelerates the process of skin irritations healing and enhances the regeneration of tissues.
Oral hygiene: Oral cavity contains a remarkable number of bacteria, which are part of its normal microflora. Propolis is used to enhance oral hygiene, mainly due to its antimicrobial action.
Propolis and its substances are safe and well tolerated by the human body, as long as the recommended daily dosage is not exceeded. Of course, propolis shouldn’t be given to infants and it is crucial to consult your doctor in advance if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Finally, it isn’t recommended in case of allergy to bee products.
